ANY form of water contamination may affect Changi Airport's image ("No more brown water from T3 taps"; Jan 31).
Changi Airport Group (CAG) should not take this incident lightly, and should conduct a thorough inquiry on the causes and prevent it from happening again.
Contractors should be supervised closely whenever there are pipe diversion works. The contractors have a duty of care to ensure that infrastructure in the area is not damaged or interfered with, and that their work does not cause inconvenience to the public.
This is done through careful planning and compliance with various codes of practice set out by the PUB.
In this case, did the CAG have a proper plan in place for the diversion? Was there a thorough site investigation to determine any risk arising from the works? Were qualified people present to ensure all necessary precautions were taken to safeguard the pipeline during diversion?
National water agency PUB should impose heavy penalties on contractors who damage water pipes during work.
I also hope the CAG compensates the food and beverage outlets whose businesses were disrupted because of the water contamination.
