I DISAGREE that points for Higher Mother Tongue should be adjusted ("Review points for Higher Mother Tongue" by Ms Ivy Tan Siew Hoon; Monday).
Students cannot think that as long as they are performing well in other subjects, they can ignore the mother tongue.
Deducting two points for improved chances of junior college entry for those who take Higher Mother Tongue is not a form of penalisation for those who do not take the subject, but encouragement for those who have taken it for the past four years.
There is also a difference in the way Mother Tongue and Higher Mother Tongue are taught; the latter allows for a deeper understanding of the language and culture.
