RENOVATION contractors have come to my door several times, while my wife and I were at work, telling my elderly parents that it was compulsory for some repair work to be done in our flat as soon as possible ("Contractors 'claiming to be HDB officials' nabbed"; Thursday).
Luckily enough, I had told my parents not to allow strangers in, even those claiming to be government officials. Families should advise their elderly members and young children to do the same.
Government agencies will send letters and put up notices in common areas if any renovation or repair work is to be done.
Perhaps, grassroots organisations, especially residents' committees, could also put up advisory posters at lift lobbies, or make house visits, to remind residents of the danger.
