[Straits Times] Consider five-year extension for COE

VEHICLES, cars in particular, are manufactured to last 20 or more years if their owners maintain them well ("Current COE bidding system is 'most flexible way'"; yesterday).

In any case, the Land Transport Authority requires vehicles above the age of three to undergo yearly inspections for roadworthiness.

Given these conditions, old cars are unlikely to break down often and cause traffic jams. So why is there a need to pay a huge sum to extend the certificate of entitlement (COE) beyond 10 years?

Many ordinary families need a car for various uses, such as ferrying children and the elderly. Having to cough up thousands of dollars to extend the COE is a heavy financial burden for the man in the street.

Could the authorities consider doing away with the need to extend the COE, or at least consider a shorter five-year extension instead of the current 10?
