I AGREE that unattractive pay continues to be the major factor behind firms' difficulties in hiring Singaporeans or permanent residents (PRs) for jobs in the service industry ("Vacancies rise as locals spurn low-paying jobs"; Jan 28).
A long work week and long working hours are also factors.
Employers and hiring managers should review starting salaries, job benefits and other factors that deter locals from applying.
They can also work with other agencies and organisations, such as private educational institutions, community centres or grassroots organisations, to provide industrial attachments or conduct job fairs.
They can turn to housewives, former convicts and troubled teens to strengthen their temporary or part-time workforce.
Every Singaporean should be given the chance to apply for a job and pursue his career interest.
I hope the Government will do more to encourage local businesses to hire Singaporeans.
Perhaps our newspapers, magazines and radio could offer cheaper advertising rates for firms which wish to employ Singaporeans or PRs.
I also urge fellow Singaporeans to continue upgrading their skills so that they will be relevant to their jobs.
