[Straits Times] SYF competition shouldn't be 'more important' than others

THE Singapore Youth Festival (SYF) is around the corner and many schools have started preparing for this competition.

Many people believe the SYF is the most prestigious and important competition students can take part in.

They do not know that there are many other competitions that performing arts co-curricular activity (CCA) groups take part in throughout the year.

However, schools take part in these other competitions only if they have the manpower or time. This has led to the impression that these competitions are unimportant.

Hence, those who take part in the SYF are considered the "finest", and participants in the other competitions are seen as less so, with less priority.

This results in the latter group of students having to give up practice space to the SYF group for at least two months in the run-up to the SYF, causing the CCA group to become segregated.

All competitions are important to the participants.

It would be good if the Ministry of Education can emphasise the importance of all competitions throughout the year.

Everyone puts in hard work and effort to do well, whether it is for the SYF or other competitions, and rehearsal space and resources ought to be equally shared.
