[Straits Times] Residents pitch in to keep neighbourhood clean

IN HIS letter ("Rope in grassroots leaders to educate on cleanliness"; Forum Online, Feb 4), Mr Raymond Anthony Fernando highlighted that everyone should do his part as active citizens to keep Singapore clean and green.

I agree with him.

Although we have various agencies including the National Environment Agency to do their part to keep our public places clean, every Singaporean should also play his part to ensure that Singapore remains litter-free.

Residents of Canberra Zone 2 get together regularly to participate in various Residents' Committee activities such as brisk walking.

During brisk-walking activities, we encourage our participants to pick up litter while they walk and exercise. This started with a small group and eventually everyone got used to it.

Since the introduction of the brisk-walking and litter-picking activities, the amount of rubbish collected by our participants has been reduced substantially, as more residents are taking care of our estate since we love the place we reside in.

As grassroots leaders, we do our part to remind our residents to keep our common areas clean, especially after major events.

We make regular announcements at events and are happy to see many residents doing their part to pack up after events together with the volunteers to ensure that the area remains neat and clean.
