[Straits Times] Retain historical value of 38, Oxley Road grounds

I AM glad to note that the Government will not make hasty decisions on how to honour our founding father Lee Kuan Yew ("No hasty decisions on honouring Mr Lee: PM"; Tuesday).

I am also happy to note that Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong is pushing to honour the late Mr Lee's core team of leaders, and not just the former Prime Minister.

Any decisions on how to honour founding fathers must inspire the next generation of Singaporeans and must encapsulate the leaders' drive to make Singapore a forward-looking, multiracial nation.

At the same time, any structure to commemorate these leaders, such as busts, must not be easily damaged or defaced.

I suggest that the grounds of the late Mr Lee's Oxley Road home be turned into a park - after the house is demolished - where the Founders' Memorial can be sited ("A Founders' Memorial to stand the test of time"; Tuesday).

Those grounds have held the house where history was made - the basement dining room was where the People's Action Party was conceived by its founding members in 1954.

Any necessary landscape changes can be made to the park, in line with Singapore's development, yet, it can still be retained as a place of great historical value to Singapore.

Instead of just having the late Mr Lee's picture on a commemorative SG50 $50 note, we could also have a new series of currency notes bearing the pictures of Mr Lee's core team members, with the note of the highest value bearing Mr Lee's picture ("SG50 commemorative note to feature Mr Lee"; Tuesday).

Perhaps, a founders' scholarship that shares the same honour as the President's Scholarship could also be set up.
