I refer to the article, “Are S’poreans anti-foreigner? Not in the real world” (April 11). It is obvious from the interviews that the result is skewed or not reflective of the cross-section of foreigners here.
For instance, there is a lack of real names among the interviewees, who are mainly senior managers or permanent residents living here for more than 10 years.
To conduct a proper, more reliable survey on the topic, I suggest giving a questionnaire to those who have been working here but are leaving the country. Their views would be more reflective of their time here, as there would be no more repercussions, at home or at work.
One respondent, though, said “a great deal of us tend to (keep) our heads down” and get on, which is unlike the positive slant of much of the article. It is called survival.
Let us address this issue objectively. As the Prime Minister said last week, nationalism is double-edged (“Rising nationalism in Asia a double-edged sword: PM”; April 11).
Singapore is a net importer. Freedom of movement of goods and services is key to its economic success. On this alone, undercurrents of nationalistic and anti-foreigner sentiments are corrosive and would cause damage, if it has not already begun.
