[Today] Prominent brochure displays vital for advertising tourist sites

With Singapore’s falling tourism numbers, we should find ways big and small to spread the word (“S$20m bid to pull tourism out of doldrums”; April 8). S$20 million is a start, but little things count too.

For instance, we could do a better job of publicising our tourist attractions visually, with brochures, which help tourists enjoy the attractions more, and help them advertise these places to friends when they get home.

Hotels often do not display these brochures in their lobbies, sometimes claiming that such displays spoil their decor. Even the Singapore Tourism Board has given up displaying brochures at the airport and has minimal displays at its downtown locations.

Most tourist destinations in other countries prominently display brochures of their local attractions at airports, hotel lobbies, et cetera. And these displays are topped up.

Having spent so much public money on attractions, we must ensure tourists know of their existence, to maximise the return on our investment.
