I refer to the announcement by SMRT that it has teamed up with a local tech firm to apply for the fourth telecommunications licence (“OMG, SMRT team up for telco bid”, April 16).
Being a daily train commuter, I was upset that instead of improving operations and reducing train disruptions, SMRT appeared concerned only with maximising profit.
It saddens me that commuters will have to bear with a train operator that does not see the urgency of looking into train disruptions and solving the problem, and which is more concerned about maximising profits for shareholders. Is this in line with the purpose of providing public transport?
Commuters put up with fare hikes in hopes that service standards will improve. I urge the authorities to look into this issue of how public transport should be operated and managed.
Perhaps, a return to the days when the Ministry of Transport had more control is in order.
