IT SEEMS like many businesses will be affected by the new alcohol restrictions ("Shops preparing to enforce new alcohol curbs"; Tuesday).
Considering that the cost of doing business in Singapore is high, and that many of those affected are small businesses, the law could have been better thought through.
This draconian law seems to have been enacted in the light of the December 2013 riot. But how often do we have such riots, or cases where people are killed and alcohol is involved?
A softer approach should be adopted. Such legislation should be introduced gradually.
For instance, the authorities could consider implementing the restricted hours only on weekends and public holidays.
They can then monitor the situation and extend the scope of the legislation only if it is necessary.
This will reduce the impact on business owners.
I hope the authorities will consider this suggestion.
