[Straits Times] Great leadership, simple lifestyle

MUCH has been said about how great a leader the late Mr Lee Kuan Yew was, and I could not agree more.

Through the documentaries and eulogies of the last week, I further learnt how caring he could be to individuals he came across, besides caring for the nation.

He was also a pillar of support to his siblings, a loving and devoted husband, a loving and supportive father, and a loving grandfather, who was willing to engage in debates with his grandson in an objective manner.

I was also struck by how simple his lifestyle was - he was frugal, Sunday lunches consisted of simple fare, and furniture in the house had not been changed for 60 years. He was a very ordinary man whom many can identify with.

Mr Lee was great, both as a leader of a country and as a family man. The same cannot be said of every leader of a country. It takes conviction, commitment and skill to balance both aspects.

I hope that families in Singapore can see Mr Lee as a good role model.
