I HAD the honour of meeting Mr Lee Kuan Yew on Sept 9, 1991, when he was senior minister, in Tanjong Pagar.
I presented him with a caricature drawn of him and his Cabinet, and asked if I could pose with him for a photo. Mr Lee kindly agreed.
He shook my hand and asked me which school I was studying in. I said the name three times, but Mr Lee still could not understand it, and he asked me to spell it out. He then corrected my pronunciation.
I was embarrassed but grateful to him at the same time, and thanked him for correcting me, as I had been pronouncing the name of my school wrongly for many years.
I thank Mr Lee for his contributions to my motherland, as well as serving as a kind of mentor to me.
I will always remember his kindness and dedication, as well as the never-say-die spirit of his 1988 National Day Rally speech, which I will always remember and draw lessons from.
