WE THANK Mr Michael Francis Teo Peck Kee for the suggestions in his letter ("Neglected areas that need community policing"; April 7).
The Community Policing System (Cops) seeks to strengthen the partnership between the police and the community to prevent, deter and detect crime. Under Cops, police presence in neighbourhoods will also be enhanced through foot and bicycle patrols.
However, with limited manpower resources, it is important that the police stay focused on their core mission to strengthen the sense of safety and security in our neighbourhoods.
Police officers, who are trained to fight crime, should not be deployed to deal with other offences such as littering and smoking, which come under the National Environment Agency, or illegal parking, which comes under the Land Transport Authority.
