[Straits Times] My Point

Reminder needed about belongings

PASSENGERS leaving their belongings in taxis are not uncommon ("Cabby goes the extra mile to find bag owner"; Tuesday).

Honest taxi drivers will try to locate the owners and return the belongings, but this can take a lot of effort and can cause some inconvenience to the drivers.

Perhaps a pre-recorded message can be played in taxis just before passengers alight, to remind them not to leave their belongings behind.

This will help both passengers and drivers.

Stub out smoking near bus stops

CURRENTLY, smoking within 5m of a bus stop is prohibited. However, we see dustbins placed close to bus stops, and smokers dispose of their cigarette butts in the ash trays there.

By positioning these bins there, we are inadvertently allowing smokers to indulge in their smoking habits.

The smoke often wafts over to those waiting at the bus stop.

These smokers subsequently board the bus together with others. The unpleasant smell of their cigarettes permeates the inside of the enclosed bus, causing passengers to suffer considerably.

It is also detrimental to health.

I suggest removing the dustbins altogether. "No smoking" signs, as well as signs stating the fine for flouting the rule, must also be conspicuously displayed.
