[Straits Times] Fine those who verbally abuse bus or cab drivers

I READ with concern the report that taxi drivers are verbally abused very often by passengers ("Passengers berate us often: Cabbies"; last Tuesday).

Such passengers probably think they have a higher status than cabbies, and so have the right to humiliate them.

Cabbies may not earn as much as some people, but they work hard to make a living. We should give them the due respect they deserve.

I have heard of cases of rude passengers, as well as of those who are violent towards taxi drivers. I have also seen bus drivers being scolded by angry passengers.

Drivers should try to keep their cool in such situations, to avoid further agitating the passengers.

Action should be taken against those who are rude to drivers of public transport. A fine could be imposed to deter more passengers from engaging in such behaviour.
