I RECENTLY received a summons from the Land Transport Authority (LTA) for driving in the bus lane along Ang Mo Kio Avenue 3 at 6.43pm on Feb 18.
I was perplexed, as that day was the eve of Chinese New Year. I had thought that since employers traditionally dismiss their staff early on that day, there would be no usual peak hour and so the bus lane would not be operational.
I spoke to an LTA officer about this. He replied that it did not matter whether the day was the eve of a public holiday or not, the bus lanes would still be in operation.
The purpose of bus lanes is to regulate traffic during hectic peak hours so commuters taking the bus can arrive home early. Bus lanes do not operate during non-peak periods.
So, I cannot understand why the bus lane was still operational on Feb 18, even though there was no evening peak hour. Could the LTA comment?
