[Straits Times] Writer of the week

WHO: K. Sabehshan, 50, Tamil tutor.

MY FAMILY: Married to a civil servant, 47, with a son, 10.

MY HOME: A rental apartment in Hill View.

MY PASSIONS: Reading newspapers, political biographies and other articles and materials of strategic interest, especially those pertaining to the Asia-Pacific region.

Once in a while, I go for brisk walks.

I STARTED WRITING TO THE FORUM PAGE IN...: December 1995.

Prior to this, while I was studying in India, I used to write to the English-language newspapers there like The Hindu and The Indian Express. I was also a regular contributor to the Tamil Murasu letters page from 1992 to 2000.

My articles have also appeared in the Far Eastern Economic Review and Asiaweek, as well as leading Indian magazines like India Today and Frontline between 1993 and 2000.

WHAT I WRITE ABOUT: Issues pertaining to Asian diplomacy, Indian politics and other local issues, especially those related to the Indian community in Singapore, culture, Tamil language and Hindu religion.

I READ THE FORUM PAGE BECAUSE...: It is the intellectual heartbeat of the average middle-class Singaporean who is born and bred here.

MY WISH FOR SINGAPORE: We should aspire to become an even more inclusive society.

At the macro level, we have done enormously well. It's time to come down to a more micro level and help those who may still be struggling to make it academically and economically, regardless of their political affiliations and ideologies.
