[Straits Times] Be appreciative of foreign workers

WE SHOULD certainly acknowledge foreign workers' contributions towards nation building, and let them participate in our national celebrations, where possible ("Foreign worker lends a hand" by Mr Francis Cheng; March 6).

These workers have sacrificed much, leaving their families and lives back home so as to earn a living here and help in the construction of our buildings and infrastructure.

They toil day and night under the hot sun, in the rain and even in the haze. They fill a huge gap by taking the jobs that Singaporeans shun.

Today, there is a core of highly skilled construction workers to meet the criteria set by the Manpower Ministry.

Foreign workers have played a big part in the building of the HDB flats, condominiums, luxurious hotels, resorts, office buildings, MRT lines and expressways that we have today.

Let us show them our appreciation and recognise the role they play.
