[Straits Times] Don't let unity be a temporary one

I WENT to work on Monday after Sunday's state funeral of our founding father, Mr Lee Kuan Yew, with a very heavy heart.

I observed the behaviour of people on the train, on the road and on the bus. Everything seemed to have gone back to normal. People did not give way, or move further inside on the bus and train to provide space for boarding passengers.

I saw some continuing to follow news about Mr Lee on Facebook and in the newspapers. Some eyes were watery.

I felt a little emotional when a Singapore permanent resident from Indonesia told me: "If not for Mr Lee Kuan Yew, I would not be here."

I really hope Singaporeans, permanent residents and foreigners working here do not take Singapore for granted, but deeply appreciate what Mr Lee and his colleagues of the early years have built for us.

For those who have been appreciative, continue to exhibit this good attitude and work and live in harmony.

For Singaporeans who do not appreciate what we have here, visit less developed countries and you will feel ashamed of your endless complaints. For foreigners here, do remember why you chose to come to Singapore and try to assimilate and follow our social norms here.
