THE installation of closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras at lift lobbies of HDB blocks in many estates has a deterrent effect against crime ("Watchful eyes in every block by end-2016"; Oct 22, 2014).
However, as such cameras are installed at the lift lobbies, they record people entering or leaving the lifts, but not what goes on inside the lifts.
The authorities should consider installing the cameras inside the lifts instead.
Although some people may consider this an invasion of privacy, the CCTV recordings will come in useful in the event of a crime, such as molestation or robbery.
People who intend to smoke or urinate in lifts will also think twice before committing such offences, as they know that their actions will be recorded and their identities can be traced.
