[Straits Times] Minister played key role in drug rehabilitation

THE Indian Community Aftercare Council wishes to add to the applause by Mr Muhammad Dzul Azhan Haji Sahban on the promotion of Mr Masagos Zulkifli to full minister ("Cabinet changes a step forward"; last Friday).

Apart from his contributions to the conduct of Singapore's foreign policy and his interactions with the Malay and other communities, Mr Masagos has played a significant role in promoting the rehabilitation of drug offenders.

As a result of his support, the Singapore Indian Development Association (Sinda) established the Indian Community Aftercare Council in February.

To date, 80 volunteers have been recruited by the council to engage in drug rehabilitative work. The volunteers are trained by the Singapore Prison Service to become befrienders to the drug offenders upon their release from prison.

The council wishes to record its appreciation to Mr Masagos for spearheading this valuable community initiative.
