[Straits Times] Neglected areas that need community policing

I APPLAUD the extension of the Community Policing System to all 35 neighbourhood police centres ("Community policing rolled out at all neighbourhood centres"; yesterday).

I hope police officers and volunteers of the scheme will consider covering the following neglected areas as part of their work:

  • Spitting in public places;

  • Littering indiscriminately in public places;

  • Smoking very close to bus stops;

  • Smoking in coffee shops and foodcourts without showing any consideration for non-smokers;

  • Pet owners who do not pick up after their dogs in public;

  • Pet owners who do not leash their dogs, even small ones, in public housing estates;

  • Shouting extremely loudly in public places for no reason;

  • Illegal waiting and/or parking of vehicles;

  • Motorised bicycles riding on pedestrian walkways;

  • Pillion riders on motorised bicycles on roads.

If the above do not come under the Community Policing System, which body can look into policing these acts? What duties come under the Community Policing System?
