[Straits Times] Preserve Mr Lee's 'databank' of experience

THE public outpouring of grief at the death of former Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew has demonstrated the success of his legacy.

It is important that we continue to honour him and preserve his legacy for our future generations.

He gave us not just a nation but also a set of values which allowed our resource-deficient country to leap-frog many countries to join the league of developed nations within one generation.

Let us not shy away from giving Mr Lee his place in history.

Mr Lee once described himself, with his vast experience and wisdom, as a "databank" ("SM: I will continue as databank in Cabinet"; Jan 9, 1997).

We should ensure that this databank is not lost.

Mr Lee's values of stoic determination, hard work, honesty, incorruptibility, concern for others, frugality and many other traits should be remembered and celebrated.

We must distil the philosophy and key learning opportunities from his leadership and life.

We must make a thorough account of his contributions and ensure we remember them.

Hopefully, by observing and teaching the values Mr Lee lived by, we will create a common set of values, which will see Singapore through many generations to come.
