[Straits Times] Save water, but keep overall picture in mind

I DISAGREE with Mr Ramesh Kumar that automatic flushing should be phased out ("Two ways to save water in public loos"; Forum Online, last Saturday).

We have to look at the overall benefit. If users do not flush after use, what are the consequences? It will give a very bad impression to visitors.

Every day, the toilets will be cleaned, and any faulty sensors will be detected, so the waste of water is limited.

Some places have also started save water campaigns blindly, limiting the amount of water flushed into the toilets. With insufficient water to flush away body waste, toilets will not be able to stay clean. Clogged toilets also lead to more costs.

Yes, we must save water. But we must also keep the overall picture in mind.
