I refer to Ms Elaine Sam’s letter, “Youth part of plastic waste solution” (March 20). I applaud what her team and other student groups are doing to help reduce the use of disposable containers and thus reduce plastic waste.
There are also other ways to use fewer disposables and reduce waste.
Most disposable containers can be reused a few times instead, after which they can be washed clean and disposed of in the recycling bin.
An exception is styrofoam, which cannot be easily recycled in Singapore due to some constraints.
This way, we can get the convenience of using disposable containers without increasing plastic waste significantly.
