[Straits Times] Pirating films disrespectful of creators' hard work

PIRACY is still rife in Singapore, as evidenced by Wednesday's report ("US firm seeks damages from illegal downloaders here").

Considering the relative ease of downloading movies, and the inherent desire to share such content, it is understandable that pirated movies are proliferating.

However, the premise of convenience should not be an excuse to download movies illegally, given that it is disrespectful of the effort that went into their production.

The enjoyment of the movie should, thus, be reciprocated in the form of ticket sales.

The worrying trend of piracy has to be nipped in the bud before it gets even worse, given the advances in technology.

It would be an uphill task to try and change the mindset of people when it comes to piracy. Perhaps what could be done is to better educate the masses about the reasons why one should not illegally download movies.

Ultimately, it is up to the individual to decide on how to obtain his entertainment.

That said, acts of piracy are a blemish on our society's image and integrity.
