[Straits Times] Vital for maids to have day off

THE article "Call to give maids more privacy, time with loved ones" (March 9) highlighted some disturbing facts - such as how 24 per cent of maids in Singapore show signs of psychological problems, and that four in 10 did not have a weekly day off.

This is shameful in a First World country like Singapore.

How many Singaporean workers can stand working seven days a week and an average of 13 hours a day?

It is crucial that the maids get their weekly day off as it allows them time off to recharge, relax and mix with friends.

It is also an effective way to bring abuse to the surface quickly, and not only when it is severe enough to reach the courts.

This is a small but important step towards resolving an important issue.
