[Straits Times] Writer of the week

WHO: Wong Shih Shen, 46, senior account manager.

MY FAMILY: Married to Yoke Ching, 45, with a daughter, Jamie, 12, and a son, Glen, 10.

MY HOME: A three-storey inter-terrace house in Upper Bukit Timah.

MY PASSIONS: Mindfulness meditation, reading business and self-help improvement books, fengshui and astrology. I am especially interested in learning more about the human condition and how we improve ourselves mentally, physically, emotionally and spiritually to handle life's challenges and to be of service to people that we meet socially and at work. Mindfulness meditation is something that I practise to be in the present, and this helps in reducing stress and focus on what is important now.

I FIRST STARTED WRITING TO THE FORUM PAGE IN...: December last year, on aviation issues.

WHAT I WRITE ABOUT: Societal issues related to retirement, the Central Provident Fund, municipal issues, transport, education and anything on which I can share my views and experience.

WHY I WRITE: Singaporeans are all stakeholders in nation-building, and it is important to speak up and provide constructive feedback that can help shape government policies and provide more perspectives for the people. This creates a more inclusive, collaborative society where different views are heard and respected; it also engenders empathy, an important attribute for harmonious living in our multiracial society.

I READ THE FORUM PAGE BECAUSE...: It provides a platform for people to share their perspectives and experiences with people from all walks of life, on topics of interest that Singaporeans care about. It is also one channel that allows the Government to learn about key issues that affect Singaporeans, and this helps the Government to serve Singaporeans a lot better.

MY WISH FOR SINGAPORE: To be a more collaborative, inclusive society where we continue to prosper as a nation, without forgetting to take care of the less well-off Singaporeans. In addition, we should also aspire for Singapore to continue with its sustainability efforts to reduce wastage and ensure that Singapore is still a good place to live for our future generations.
