[Straits Times] Time to review U-23 team's performance

THE Singapore U-23 football team suffered yet another loss when they fell to the Cambodian U-22 team recently ("Football: Nine-man Singapore U-23 team suffer shock loss to Cambodia's U-22s"; Straits Times Online, March 19).

Is all the money spent on the friendly matches adequately preparing the U-23s for the coming SEA Games? From the look of things, they are not ready for the Games.

I hope the Singapore National Olympic Council and Football Association of Singapore can come up with some key performance indicators (KPIs) for the friendly matches.

If the team cannot meet these KPIs, they should not take part in the SEA Games or they would be an embarrassment to the nation.

As for coach Aide Iskandar's call to judge the team at the SEA Games ("Fans vent their anger on Aide"; March 20), it would be too late by then: If they are not well prepared for the friendlies, how can they do well during the SEA Games?

The U-23s have been underperforming. The authorities should take a cold, hard look at the situation, and let the team sit out the SEA Games instead of risking a quick exit.
