[Straits Times] Be sensitive towards others, to preserve social harmony

THE recent attack on Charlie Hebdo's office in Paris and the barbaric beheadings by the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria are some of the terrorism-related events unfolding in the world today ("The long arm of Islamic radicalism"; last Wednesday).

Although these events may seem far removed from Singapore, we must never underestimate the importance of maintaining peace and security in our multiracial society.

Considering Singapore's racial make-up, it is crucial that we ensure unity in the community while promoting tolerance and inclusiveness.

On the individual level, we should be sensitive towards different viewpoints and beliefs. Any insensitive comment against a person's religion or race could instigate unrest.

Social discord would be intolerable for Singapore, a small country that relies heavily on political stability and social harmony.

I hope Singaporeans will protect the peace and harmony we enjoy today, and preserve our reputation for religious moderation.
