[Today] Time to claim back public spaces from rowdy drinkers

The proposed ban on drinking in public after 10.30pm is pertinent and expedient, akin to banning smoking in certain places, albeit that the latter is for health reasons. (“The public drinking clampdown”; Talking Point)

But alcohol intrudes into our space and can endanger lives. It has the potential also to ignite social disorder, as in the Little India riot.

It is time we claim back our void decks and fields and stop intoxicated people from abusing public places with their rowdy, threatening and indecent behaviour. They bellow, fight and even urinate, sometimes indiscreetly.

When this binge drinking is over, the place looks like a battle zone, with glass and food strewn all over. If left unchecked, this would be a social disease across Singapore every night.

I praise the Government for its tough action, for showing its mettle by not bowing to pro-business groups, because 80 per cent of Singaporeans live within these public places. Singapore’s image and Singaporeans’ safety come first.

The move to eradicate this menace is a welcome relief to citizens.
