[Straits Times] Standard grille designs won't spoil look of condos

IT IS timely and appropriate for condominiums to allow residents to install safety grilles on balconies and windows ("Call for condos to lift ban on safety grilles"; Sunday).

Condominium management committees should look into the safety of families with young children, who may not understand the dangers of having an unprotected window or exposed balcony.

Perhaps the committees could come up with a set of approved grille designs for the sake of uniformity, to maintain the project's aesthetic value.

Developers of new high-rise condos should work with the Building and Construction Authority to include safety features in their designs.

The recent case of a two-year-old boy who fell to his death from an eighth-storey bedroom window in the Kovan Melody condo should serve as a wake-up call to condo management committees.
