[Straits Times] MediaCorp CNY show needs improvement

IT PAINS me to see that after all the effort and money in commercialising MediaCorp, and bringing in media whales such as Lucasfilm to Singapore, Channel 8's Chinese New Year Eve gala show is a far cry from that produced by China Central Television (CCTV).

MediaCorp's Channel 8 show seems to be stuck in the old format dating back to the days of Radio Television Singapore.

CCTV's show focuses on cultural diversity, family ties and the expression of gratitude. In contrast, Channel 8's version lacks substantial and progressive cultural content, promotes superstitious get-lucky beliefs and shows no real progress or design creativity.

I suggest the following to close the quality gap:

  • Accept that we can learn from the Chinese;

  • Strive to become the most-watched CNY gala show for overseas Chinese by showcasing the Chinese diaspora all over the world celebrating the festival in their unique multicultural ways;

  • Acquire Chinese show-business talent.

After 50 years of nationhood, we should showcase our diversity to the world.
