[Straits Times] Sex is beautiful, and worth the wait

IT IS precisely because sex is beautiful that we do not want to rush into it ("Underage sex: Tell teens they are worth the wait" by Mrs Shelen Ang; Feb 12).

We learn to control ourselves; we learn to choose to abstain. The truth is, there is something beautiful in the ability to control ourselves out of respect for another person.

However, as Mrs Ang pointed out, young people today are bombarded with sexual images on all fronts by the media, the Internet and advertisements.

A relationship takes time and sacrifice to build. Our young men need to learn to respect our young women. To give an illustration, most men would probably not agree to other men sleeping with their sisters before marriage. However, have they paused to consider that the person they want to bed is somebody else's sister, somebody else's future wife, somebody else's aunt or niece?

To progress to a new level of consideration for the people around us, we should begin with respecting our own bodies and then, those of others. As parents, and as a society, let us help our next generation grow healthily, in full control of their passions and desires.
