[Straits Times] Moving towards an inclusive society

I APPLAUD Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam for delivering a wholesome Budget ("Budget 2015: Building for the future"; yesterday).

With this Budget, Singapore is on track to building an inclusive society.

The Government has walked the talk by taking care of the welfare of the elderly, especially those with little savings, with the Silver Support Scheme. It is also providing help for the sandwiched middle class.

There are opportunities for Singaporeans to upgrade their skills with subsidies for courses, and fees for major exams have been waived. There are also other benefits for Singaporeans from all walks of life.

As a pioneer citizen, I am grateful that the Government has its citizens' welfare at heart.

We must remember that Singapore has gone from Third World to First World status in a short span of 50 years, with no natural resources, and on the hard work of persevering and conscientious people.

We must be grateful for what we have been given and should not take peace and prosperity for granted.

As a small, vulnerable island, we must be vigilant amid the changes around us that can affect our economy and stability.

I hope Singapore continues to flourish in the next 50 years, governed by capable and honest people.
