[Straits Times] Parents, do your part in teaching correct values

PARENTS are the first line of defence in teaching and inculcating the correct values to the next generation ("Empower parents as main sexuality educators" by Dr John Hui Keem Peng; last Saturday). They should start teaching their children about marriage, keeping oneself pure and respecting others - from when their children are young, at a cognitive age of four to five.

Although, as parents, we may feel that we want to celebrate with our daughters and sons when they find that "special someone", we should understand that we have very important roles to fulfil.

Loving our children means that we should guide them to the right path and teach them that true love is worth the wait, as this love is meant to be lifelong.

Sons should be taught to respect women at all times. This is also about showing respect to the women's parents.

Keeping yourself pure and chaste for your future wife or future husband ensures that the wedding night is a special and sacred occasion shared only by two people who deeply love, honour, cherish and respect each other.

Therefore, as parents, we should teach our children that it is most beneficial to exercise restraint and self-control.
