[Today] To get youth to care for elderly, start at home

I refer to this week’s Talking Point, “Are we still a filial society?” Today’s young are engrossed with their phones and social media; little time is devoted to healthy conversation and meaningful encounters with their elders.

If one poses the question of whose responsibility it is to care for the elderly, one can be assured of less debate or lack of interest in ageing issues.

By 2030, more than 900,000 elderly citizens who have played a pivotal role in nation building will need a helping hand. Our youth should be there to serve passionately, caringly and tirelessly. The virtues are embedded in our traditional family upbringing.

While we recognise the numerous programmes that have been formalised to cater for the ageing society, one can often derive the problem and solution from the home. Grandparents and parents build the family, while children are spendthrifts and grandchildren live in their comfort zones.

In the final analysis, filial piety is a matter of the heart.
