[Straits Times] Dynamic pricing could be a problem

SURCHARGES seem to be getting more common ("Clamp down on festive surcharges" by Ms Gwen Lee McPherson; Forum Online, Feb 6). The travel industry demands a surcharge if the travel dates fall during peak periods. Hotels impose a surcharge if the stay falls during public or festive holidays. Some restaurants have started charging for water served to their patrons.

The most recent would be imposing a compulsory Chinese New Year surcharge on meals during the festive period, as reported by netizens.

The reasons could be that the restaurants have to pay more for the food ingredients and for staff to work during the festive period. But are these surcharges justified?
