EVEN though polytechnic students get to enjoy the same monthly concession pass prices as their peers in junior colleges (JCs), poly students still have to pay adult fares if they do not purchase a monthly concession pass.
However, the savings that polytechnic students like me stand to gain if we buy such a concession pass is only $3 a month.
Despite the allowance for poly students to purchase concession passes, bus and train fares are still not easily affordable for many full-time students studying in polytechnics.
Student concession fares are meant to allow students to travel to and from school without worrying about the cost of transport. In this respect, poly students, like JC students, should be able to enjoy full student concession rates without the need to purchase a monthly concession pass.
In the light of the recently announced public transport fare revision ("Bus, train rides to cost a few cents more from April"; last Thursday), I hope the authorities can look into this matter and allow poly students to enjoy the same fares as their JC peers, and lift a heavy financial load off all polytechnic students.
