[Straits Times] S'pore roads not meant to be cyclists' playground

IT WAS reported that a cycling fitness app, Strava, from the United States that allows riders to compete virtually has exploded in popularity here ("Cycling app Strava takes local riders by storm"; last Saturday). The app is just encouraging more to ride on our busy roads.

Of late, it is common to see cyclists riding in packs occupying major arterial roads, where the speed limit is more than 70kmh, such as Nicoll Highway and Lornie Road.

It puzzles me that cyclists are encouraged to use our roads in such a manner. They are not regulated, such as having to take the highway code or get insurance or a licence. Many have been breaking rules blatantly. They ride through red lights, hog roads, ride on bus lanes and pose a danger to motorists.

Many a time, motorists on the extreme left lanes, while driving at a speed of 70kmh, have had to swerve right to avoid hitting the slower cyclists, forcing those in the adjacent lanes to brake or swerve as well.

Our roads are not meant to be cyclists' playground. I urge the authorities to regulate them and limit their road use to non-peak hours if they really want to ride.
