Account 'not in bank's records'
MY WIFE opened a savings account with United Overseas Bank's Mount Elizabeth branch in December 1989. The last deposit was made in January 1990 and the account has a balance of $1,011.30.
Lately, my wife decided to close this account.
We made inquiries at the bank and received a letter last month saying that the savings account had been terminated and the account is no longer in the bank's record.
The letter said that the bank did not have the account details as it had exceeded the retention period of records required by regulatory bodies.
When asked about the money in the account, the branch manager said he was unable to return the money.
We were shocked and taken aback by this. Can the authorities comment and tell us if the money can still be recovered?

Find way to match taxis to passengers
I WAS at Singapore General Hospital recently and noticed a long queue of people waiting for a taxi at Block 7.
A short distance away, at Block 3, there was a long queue of taxis which spilled onto the main road.
If we cannot even facilitate the efficient distribution of taxis over such a small area, how can we achieve the goal of making taxis readily available islandwide?
Surely we can come up with a way to share information with taxi drivers to attract them to where the crowds are.
This would improve their productivity, as well as the overall commuter experience.

Curb family violence with panic button
LATELY, there seems to be an increase in family violence in flats here.
The town councils and police could consider installing emergency buttons to connect the blocks of flats to the neighbourhood police post. These buttons can be installed at the lift landing of every floor.
If an unusual commotion is heard at a particular unit, neighbours can press the emergency button to request assistance, and the police can immediately come and investigate.
Timely intervention may save residents from being injured or killed.
