Is the proposal to ban alcohol consumption in public places after 10.30pm heavy-handed, as alleged by a Forum writer?
In many countries, there are strict restrictions on drinking alcohol in unlicensed public spaces. For certain places at certain times of the year, there are total alcohol bans.
Sure, some might say this is a bit heavy-handed, but what it does is ensure that drunk and obnoxious people aren't cruising around causing trouble.
There are many licensed premises in Singapore or, of course, people's homes where alcohol can be consumed.
I think this is a definite step in the right direction.

This ban is long overdue. No amount of cajoling and friendly persuasion can convince irresponsible drinkers to reduce littering and rowdy behaviour.
- Francis Chong
It is fair to curb alcohol consumption at selected places but not everywhere. People should be able to enjoy a few drinks after 10.30pm in places like parks and gardens... Introduce a stringent penalty for offences due to alcohol consumption as an added preventive measure.

We are adults who can make our own decisions. This curbs our freedom. The authorities should go after those who make trouble and litter when they are intoxicated.
- Clarice Viola Pereira
It's not heavy-handed as much as unfairly targeted at two groups - foreign
workers who hang out in public places, and low-income Singaporeans who can't afford to go to bars and clubs.
- Joshua Ip
It's going to be impossible to enforce this.
- Gabriel Chia
It is indeed inconvenient for those organising outdoor events to apply for a permit... However, let's keep it in perspective: Drinking is a luxury and not a necessity.
