[Straits Times] No need for pioneers package Part 2

OF COURSE it is good for all seniors, upon reaching, say, age 65, to receive benefits similar to those in the Pioneer Generation Package ("Pioneers package Part 2? 'It'll depend on next generation'"; Jan 27).

However, we have to be realistic as this will cost a lot of taxpayers' money in order to be sustainable.

Most of our pioneers had little or no education. They laboured to earn a living and enjoyed no luxury items, as all the money earned was used to make ends meet.

Our current generation is different, as many, if not all, possess at least an O-level certificate. They are well educated and have the means to earn a better living than our pioneers had.

Hence, most of them do not truly need financial assistance. If we were to have Pioneer Generation Package 2, will there be a similar Package 3, and so on? This is highly unsustainable and impractical.
