[Straits Times] Residents entitled to comfortable, peaceful home

I AM sceptical about allowing short-term rentals in private estates ("Short-term rentals a boon if properly regulated" by Dr Huang Shoou Chyuan; Jan 26).

Residents used their hard-earned money to buy their dream flats, with a view to living in a comfortable and safe environment.

Why should we empower the strata title members with the right to adjust the by-laws to incorporate short-term leasing and turn our private estate into a hotel? Why turn a residential area into a commercial one?

Some owners buy their properties for speculative purposes and do not care to whom they are renting as long as they can maximise rental profits. Some even erect unauthorised partitions to create more space for rent.

How does the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) manage these offenders?

Short-term stayers will not care how they use the facilities. Those living in the estate will have to put up with the noise, disturbances, lack of privacy and security, damage to common facilities, as well as dumping and littering.

I hope the URA will consider seriously before making short-term home rentals a possibility for private estates.

Everyone is entitled to enjoy their home in comfort and peace.
