[Straits Times] Time to shame litterbugs

ENOUGH is enough with litterbugs. Such an anti-social habit requires offenders to be shamed, for the problem to be nipped in the bud, since all educational efforts and campaign drives over a long time have not brought about any improvement.

In addition to a hefty fine, litterbugs should be made to remove trash and pick up litter in the area where they live. This would be more shameful, as they would be seen by their neighbours - people who know them.

In order for the shaming to be an effective deterrent against littering, the offenders should also be brightly dressed, with an "I have littered" sign, while they carry out the corrective work order.

Additionally, outdoor event organisers should also be made to pay a retention fee which will be forfeited if there is litter at the event venue.
