I refer to the report “A S$25 million boost for S’pore football” (Feb 3).
As one of the many fans who have urged local corporations to embark on sports sponsorships, I am delighted that the Football Association of Singapore has signed a partnership deal with an international company.
Beyond the eye-catching financial figure, it is encouraging that the ambition of our football administrators and their Strategic Plan were key factors that prompted MP & Silva to ink the six-year deal.
The FAS’ reputation and strengths in administration have been highlighted publicly in recent years, such as in 2013, when the French Football Federation expressed its delight to be working with “one of Asia’s best football administrators”.
That the likes of Safuwan Baharudin (“Safuwan’s Melbourne stint vital”: Jan 30), Hariss Harun and Adam Swandi have attracted interest from foreign teams underscores the success of our system and the association’s commitment to youth development.
Working with a small budget is not easy and would inevitably result in having to prioritise programmes based on long-term goals and interests. In this regard, the FAS has directed its limited resources towards developing young players in recent years.
It has excelled in this area, and with MP & Silva joining hands with the top sport in Singapore, we have every reason to believe we can soon compete in the Asian Football Confederation Asian Cup on a regular basis.
With the injection of funds, we are well-placed to achieve the key targets of any sport, one of which is to produce a pool of talented players who will represent the country and do well in international competitions.
The much-needed financial support would also enable the FAS to implement programmes in non-competitive aspects of football, such as grassroots football, which are equally important.
As we celebrate our 50th birthday, let us continue to support Singapore football and leverage its appeal to bond this nation.
I also hope our homegrown corporations step forward and demonstrate their support for local sports, including football, which can reach out to millions of Singaporeans.
