[Today] Use public debates to vet MPs, govt leaders

I refer to the letter “Pick right parts for effective running of S’pore machine” (Jan 21). The challenge is how to pick the right parts effectively and appropriately.

It is unrealistic to assume that all Members of Parliament (MPs) are of equal quality and strength.

There is no better way to vet aspiring MPs and potential government leaders than to observe how they carry themselves in handling and debating challenging issues as well as opposing views.

It is not too early to put them, and even existing MPs and office bearers, in public forums to debate government policies and strategies with others who may hold differing views and solutions, and not exclusively those from opposition parties.

This can help build an inclusive world-class nation.
