[Straits Times] Care, concern and practical solutions for students

MR LEE Kuan Yew visited London in 1971 for the meeting of the heads of Commonwealth nations.

At that time, I was the president of the Association of Singapore Students in the UK and Eire (Assuke), representing more than 1,200 Singaporeans studying in the country.

He called for me and a few other students through the Singapore High Commission to have a dialogue with him at Cambridge University, where he was to address students from Singapore.

Mr Lee asked if there was anything he could do for us.

We were taken aback by his concern, as he had learnt that facilities in Malaysia Hall were no longer available to Singapore students since 1965, following the split of both countries.

He advised us not to lock horns with its student union and to stay away from the hall.

He then instructed the Singapore High Commission to allow us to use printing and meeting room facilities there.

Mr Lee understood our problem and addressed the issue in a most pragmatic way.

His concern and care really touched us.
